Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos

Veteran safety Justin Simmons said that he has high hopes for the Broncos in 2021. 'I feel like we're really close,' Simmons said. 'We're finally having a year where we're having coordinators come back and guys are familiar with the schemes and the systems, both on offense and defense and on special teams. I feel like we're really close.' The Denver secondary is one of the best in the league with Kyle Fuller and Ronald Darby at corner and Simmons and Kareem Jackson at safety. If edge-rushers Bradley Chubb and Von Miller can stay healthy, the Broncos could easily field the best defense in the AFC West--and a unit that will fantasy-relevant more weeks than not.

New England Patriots

New England Patriots

The Patriots were as busy as any team in the NFL in free agency in 2021 on both sides of the ball. And veteran safety Adrian Phillips said that he's chomping at the bit to get after it after seeing all the new pieces together on the practice field. 'When you put all those pieces together and there ain't no telling what we can do,' said Phillips, the veteran safety. 'You see a jump across the whole field and overall making our defense better.' It's not just new faces like edge-rusher Matthew Judon either--linebacker Kyle Van Noy is back after a year in Miani, as is Dont'a Hightower, who opted out of the 2020 season. Keep in mind, two years ago the Patriots led all defenses in fantasy points by a fairly robust margin.

Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans

The Titans have been a playoff team each of the past two seasons, but in 2020 at least the Tennessee defense was more liability than asset--only four teams allowed more yards per game, That was largely due to one of the NFL's most anemic pass rushes, and after managing just 19 sacks in 2020 (third-fewest in the league), the team doled out big bucks to Pittsburgh edge-rusher Alvin Dupree in an effort to get more production in that regard. However, while Dupree was effective with the Steelers and joins a defense that has a good young defensive tackle in Jeffery Simmons, Dupree also tore his ACL last December. It's simple, really--for the Titans to have any hope of becoming a fantasy-relevant defense, they have to a better job pressuring passers.

Washington Football Team

Washington Football Team

On paper, there may not be a better defense in the NFL than Washington. The defensive line anchored by end Chase Young is the deepest in the league, sporting a quartet of first-round picks. The linebacker corps added range and athleticism with the selection of Kentucky linebacker Jamin Davis in the first round of the 2021 draft. The secondary brought in an accomplished veteran free agent at cornerback in William Jackson. Washington finished last year second in total defense and fourth in both scoring defense and fantasy points at the position. A similar season in 2021 is likely, and improvement is a real possibility.
