Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have long fielded a stout defense, finishing the 2020 campaign seventh in the league in total defense and fifth at the position in fantasy points while leading the AFC in scoring defense at just 18.9 points allowed per game. Baltimore's cornerback duo of Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Peters may well be the best one-two punch in the league at his position, but there's at least one big-time question looming. With Matthew Judon and Yannick Ngakoue both leaving the Ravens in free agency, Baltimore has a major potential issue on the edge. If holdovers Pernell McPhee and Tyus Bowser and newcomer Odafe Oweh don't pick up the slack, those Pro Bowl cornerbacks are going to be put to the test. That makes the Ravens a tough team to trust for fantasy managers given the team's ADP in drafts so far this summer.

Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills

The Bills defense features a lot of players who have been together for some time, and linebacker Matt Milano said that familiarity is a big plus for the team in 2021. 'We're ahead of the game. We're rolling, especially on defense, the back seven I think has been together for four-plus years now, if not more than that.' The Buffalo defense actually backslid in a few areas statistically last year, but the return of defensive tackle Star Lotulelei and the addition of a pair of young edge-rushers in the draft (Gregory Rousseau and Carlos Basham) should help Buffalo improve on last year's ninth-place finish.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers

There are certain constants in the universe. Death. Taxes. And the Pittsburgh Steelers making opposing quarterbacks miserable. As has been the case so many times in recent years, no team in the league had more sacks in 2020 than the 56 the Steelers amassed a year ago--a number that propelled Pittsburgh to a runner-up finish behind the Los Angeles Rams in fantasy points. Pittsburgh's front seven is absolutely stacked with Stephon Tuitt and Cameron Heyward up front and Devin Bush and T.J. Watt at linebacker. But there are some legitimate questions in the secondary after two of the Steelers top three cornerbacks left in free agency. Still, the Steelers are about as safe a bet as fantasy managers are likely to see among team defenses given their consistency the past several years.

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers

There's a new defensive coordinator in San Fran after Robert Saleh was named head coach of the Jets, but new DC DeMeco Ryans said that the Niners aren't about to backslide on that side of the ball. 'You will see some wrinkles, you will see my brand of football on it,' Ryans said. 'Our D-Line is going to attack. ... We're going to let our D-Line just get off the ball and attack, and we're going to clean up things behind them, but we will be a more, I feel like aggressive, attacking defense.' The most important thing necessary to the 49ers to get back to the top five among fantasy defenses is easy--health. There wasn't a D in the league that was hit harder by injuries in 2020.

Los Angeles Rams

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams had themselves quite a season defensively in 2020--LA ranked first in the league in total defense, scoring defense and fantasy points among defenses, while also leading the NFC with 53 sacks. Apparently having a three-time Defensive Player of the Year (Aaron Donald) in the middle of the defensive line is a good thing. The Rams should once again rank among the league's best defensive squads again in 2021, but there are some potential areas of concern--the Rams lost two starters in the secondary in safety John Johnson and cornerback Troy Hill, and there's a new defensive coordinator in town in Raheem Morris after Brandon Staley left to become head coach of the Chargers.
